Despite strict laws to prevent child marriage in the country, the situation is becoming alarming. According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report, child marriage cases in 2023 increased sixfold compared to 2022.

The report states that 6,038 cases were registered in 2023, while only 1,002 cases were registered in 2022 and 1,050 in 2021. Thus, a sudden significant increase in child marriage-related cases has been observed over three years.

The highest number of cases were registered in Assam, where 5,267 cases alone came to light. This accounts for about 90% of the total cases registered nationwide. Additionally, 174 cases were registered in Tamil Nadu, 145 in Karnataka, and 118 in West Bengal.
