In a dramatic turn of events, technology became a lifesaver when a 26-year-old Mumbai techie, Kshitij Zodape, narrowly escaped a fatal scuba diving accident near Puducherry, all thanks to his Apple smart watch.

A Dive Gone Wrong

An avid diver since 2020, Kshitij was exploring the Bay of Bengal, about 36 metres underwater, when his weight belt suddenly came loose, causing him to shoot upward uncontrollably. The waters were rough, visibility poor, and the situation turned life-threatening in seconds.

As his ascent began, the Apple Watch Ultra on his wrist detected the rapid vertical movement and immediately flashed warnings, urging him to slow down. A fast rise to the surface can cause lung expansion injuries one of diving’s deadliest risks.
