More than eight decades since the “Day of Infamy,” scientists are still studying the Pearl Harbor attack.
The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI) in Falmouth reported Friday that oil from the USS Arizona has never stopped leaking into the ocean, where it was sunk on Dec. 7, 1941, in Hawaii.
The sneak attack killed 1,177 of Arizona’s crew, and the ship was beyond salvage, resting in a watery grave where oil oozes into the harbor to this day.
WHOI scientists say the wreck is being studied to help “strengthen preparedness and planning for future operations at other shipwrecks.” The oil, WHOI added, is California crude with high concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), compounds “known for their persistence and potential toxicity.”
