Entering this season, few Boston Red Sox fans would’ve signed on for three more years of Trevor Story. But things have changed since last spring, and Story now is among the more fascinating Red Sox storylines to follow this offseason.
Story has two years and $55 million remaining on the six-year, $140 million contract he signed in 2022. However, he can opt out of the deal and test free agency this winter, an outcome more possible now than it was a year ago following Story’s resurgent 2025 campaign.
If Story elects to opt out, the Red Sox could void the decision by adding an extra year (2028) to the deal for $20 million, effectively extending the 32-year-old for three years at $75 million.
