In Maigret , George Simenon's intrepid Inspector is reimagined for a new era, setting this series and its leading detective apart from its many, many predecessors. An admittedly bold but understandable choice, PBS Masterpiece's six-episode Maigret pushes Patrick Harbinson's interpretation of Inspector Jules Maigret into the 21st century for the first time, complete with cell phones, influencers, and YouTube amid the usual murders, robberies, and arrests.

Given the prevalence of Maigret adaptations set in the mid-20th century, updating this version does work somewhat in the show's favor. It's easier to judge this new remake on its own merits, rather than subconsciously compare it to the versions that came before, especially British comic legend Rowan Atkinson's most recent take on
