Jackson police are investigating a shooting that left a 19-year-old dead and another person injured during an alleged vehicle theft.

Interim Jackson Police Chief Tyree Jones said an unidentified 19-year-old male suspect approached an individual, an unidentified victim, at a residence on Thursday, Oct. 2, at the intersection of Lakewood Drive and McDowell Road.

According to Jones, the teenager is accused of stealing a car from the victim's yard, which led to a shootout between the two.

Sometime afterward, the teenager allegedly stole the victim's vehicle and crashed it into a ditch in the 2800 block of Lakewood Drive.

Police responded to the crash but stated that the primary crime scene was believed to be at the residence.
