Is one of the most chilling characters in horror movie history based on a real person?

Before there was Norman Bates, the knife-wielding murderer obsessed with his late mother in the seminal 1960 movie "Psycho," there was Ed Gein, a killer whose crimes at his Wisconsin farm were discovered in 1957.

"The Butcher of Plainfield" is the subject of the new Netflix series "Monster: The Ed Gein Story," which starts streaming on Oct. 3. Charlie Hunnam plays Gein, who admitted to murdering two people and was found with numerous objects made from human skin at his Wisconsin farm.
