The Senate was set to reconvene Friday to vote on whether to take up dueling proposals to reopen the government, but neither was expected to win the bipartisan backing needed to end the 3-day-old shutdown.

The votes early Friday afternoon concern the same federal funding plans that have repeatedly failed, one from Republicans and the other by Democrats. Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., the majority leader, said he would send senators home for the weekend if Democrats again blocked the GOP plan.

Speaking to reporters Thursday, Thune said: “They’ll have a fourth chance tomorrow to vote to open up the government, and if that fails, we’ll give them the weekend to think about it, and we’ll come back and vote on Monday.”
