ST. LOUIS — The enrollment of international students has significantly dropped at some of the area's largest universities this year amid Trump administration efforts to curb immigration and change visa rules.

St. Louis University saw the steepest decline, with 1,566 fewer international students this fall compared to last fall.

Nearly 1,000 fewer foreign students are enrolled at Washington University in St. Louis.

The largest decreases are in the ranks of international graduate students, who represent a lifeline for many U.S. universities to boost enrollments — as well as the schools' bottom lines — as birth rates decline and the luster of higher education dims for some Americans.
