SUMTER COUNTY, Fla. – A 62-year-old Lecanto man driving an SUV through Sumter County died early Friday after suffering a medical emergency on State Road 44, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred around 2:41 a.m., east of NW 33rd Drive, troopers said.

According to a preliminary FHP crash report, the man was driving a Toyota Highlander westbound on S.R. 44 when he suffered a medical emergency, departed the road, entered a ditch and struck a barbed-wire fence.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, the report states.
