Novak Djokovic returned for the first time since his US Open semi-final heartbreak loss to Carlos Alcaraz. The 24-time Grand Slam Champion defeated Marin Cilic in straight sets 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 in his opening game in the Shanghai Masters on Friday, October 3.

It was a clash between two veterans, and Djokovic was struggling a little bit in the first set as he saved two break points at 5-5. Čilić failed to take advantage against the former world no. 1, and thus the set went to the tie-breaker.

Djokovic showed his domination and won the tiebreaker 7-2. The 38-year-old player took advantage early on in the second set as he converted a break point early and took control of the game. This was his first victory since the US Open loss, and he cruised to the third round of the Shanghai Masters.
