DUBUQUE, Iowa (KCRG) - The Dubuque School District held an open house at Jefferson Middle School on Thursday. It’s one of two opportunities residents can attend to learn more about the district’s request for a $70 million bond issue this November .

The plans would reduce the number of middle schools from 3 to 2. Jefferson would no longer be used, and Washington would be demolished, and a new building would be built in its place.

Dubuque Superintendent Amy Hawkins said after the 2023 $150 million bond vote narrowly failed, the community expressed a need for the district to have more skin in the game. She said that was the reason it would be using $50 million of SAVE funding, as well as bond money, to construct the new building. She said it would be a more efficient way to teach students
