A federal grant of more than $3 million awarded to the city of Joplin will pay for lead abatement to rid eligible Joplin homes of lead paint hazards.

According to a city document, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development last year announced that more than $420 million would be made available to replace lead-tainted components of houses. Joplin applied and was awarded $3.15 million. The city is to provide $350,000 in matching money for the grant. ×
