NBA superstar Zion Williamson delivered on his promise to "have some fun" by throwing down a spectacular alley-oop as New Orleans overcame a spirited Melbourne United in their historic exhibition clash.

Showcasing his new physique for the first time, the trimmer Williamson scored 15 points in the Pelicans' hard-fought 107-97 victory at Rod Laver Arena on Friday night.

It was the first time an NBA team had played in Australia, and headline act Williamson wowed the sold-out crowd when he soared to latch on to a Saddiq Bey toss and tucked it away.

Williamson also had five assists, two rebounds and two steals in 16 minutes on court.
