RICHFORD, Vt. (ABC22/FOX44) - One man will appear in court next month after he said he mistook a German Shepherd dog for a bear.

According to police reports, one man was with his dog Wednesday evening at about 5:00 p.m., when he said he heard a gunshot. He said his German Shepherd was in a nearby field at the time. The dog was reportedly shot and ran back to the man's home, but did not survive its injuries.

The incident reportedly took place near the intersection of Vermont Route 105/St. Albans Road and Magoon Road, to the southwest of the town center of Richford.

Police were looking Wednesday for a man seen getting into a white pickup truck and driving back towards the town center. On Thursday night, they said they had identified the suspect as Nathan Peters, 37, of Richford.
