The mother of a Black student at a Chicago public magnet school filed a lawsuit against the city’s board of education, alleging that her daughter endured sexual, physical, verbal, and racist abuse from students and teachers over three years, starting when she was in fifth grade.

Sher’Ron Hinton, a 31-year-old single mother, says she was initially elated when her daughter and four younger children prevailed in the school lottery process and were enrolled in the high-performing Wildwood IB World Magnet School for students in pre-K through 8th grade in 2022.

“Jenny Doe,” as she’s identified in the lawsuit filed in Cook County District Court in July (and obtained by Atlanta Black Star) was then 10 years old, and the only Black student in her classes at the school, where fewer than 4 percent
