Not far from where the region's founders first crossed the Rock River 190 years ago, Rockford officials turned shovelfuls of dirt Oct. 3 as the city embarked on a $15.5 million renovation of the long-underutilized Davis Park .

It's near where Rockford was founded, where its first industries blossomed and now where culture will thrive, GoRockford CEO John Groh said.
