ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — This Bills Meet the Mafia story of strength and courage centers around a 12-year-old girl from Central New York named Mariah Wilcox.

Mariah was born with a severe leg length discrepancy. One leg was several inches shorter than the other. She underwent 11 years of surgeries and spent much of her childhood in pain in her foot and hip and back.

After getting a second opinion at Shriners Children’s Hospital in New England, Maria was given a difficult choice. She could continue treatments, which could slightly lengthen her shortened limb, or she could amputate her leg a little above the ankle, and would be given a prosthetic leg.

After a several weeks of consideration, it was Mariah herself that decided to go through with the amputation.
