WASHINGTON, Iowa (KCRG) - Homecoming Week looks a bit different this year as the Washington community memorializes the life of a recently killed teen.
Carson Ryan, 17, was posthumously crowned Homecoming King Thursday night in the Washington High School Auditorium.
A poster photo of Ryan was displayed on a chair next to Homecoming Queen, Iris Dahl.
The community is also honoring Ryan during Homecoming festivities with hand-painted window signage and custom black-and-orange t-shirts with his football jersey number 80.
Ryan was squirrel hunting with a group September 28 in rural Brighton when he was shot and killed. Iowa DNR said the investigation is ongoing but ruled the shooting accidental.
Ryan’s family described him as “a friend to all.”
