FORT SMITH, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — Fort Smith Fall Festival activities at the National Historic Site are officially canceled amid the federal shutdown.

The 170-year-old Fort Smith National Historic Site was forced to close and send employees home on Oct.1 after a federal budget dispute. This closure means the Fall Festival on Oct. 3 will be without one of its largest attractions.

On the Fort Smith Fall Fest website, the tab for the Fort Smith National Historic Site reads "CLOSED DUE TO GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN."

Although the site is free, tourism revenue is essential for the city, drawing 200,000 to 300,000 visitors annually. With no end to the shutdown in sight, Fort Smith risks losing revenue from meals, shopping and other visitor spending.
