MASSILLON ‒ A person was killed when a detached garage exploded Oct. 3 in a residential area, city Fire Chief Matt Heck said.
Firefighters responded to the explosion at about 3:30 p.m. in the 200 block of 17th Street NE. The garage was destroyed.
Authorities are investigating the cause.
The Stark County Coroner's Office was at the scene at 4:45 p.m. Smoke could still be seen coming from the debris.
No one was in the nearby home at the time. Surrounding homes were damaged by the explosion, with broken windows.
Authorities placed a blue tarp to prevent onlookers from seeing into an area of the backyard, where some debris could be seen.
