Former Detroit Red Wings second-round pick Givani Smith played well enough in his professional tryout with the Carolina Hurricanes to earn a one-year, two-way contract with the club for $775,000.
Smith, 27, has appeared in four preseason games for the Hurricanes, picking up two goals and an assist and registering a team-high 28 penalty minutes.
“Givani came to camp as a PTO and proved that he deserved a role in the organization,” Hurricanes general manager Eric Tulsky said in a statement. “His size and physicality make him a good fit to add depth to our forward group.”
Smith split last season between the NHL and AHL, appearing in 13 NHL games with San Jose and Colorado (no points) and 16 AHL games with the Colorado Eagles and Lehigh Valley Phantoms (one goal, two assists).
