Deputies recovered a stolen firearm in the parking lot of a local high school during a traffic stop in DeKalb County, Alabama Thursday.

The DeKalb County Sheriff's Office says when deputies conducted the traffic stop, they found an empty holster inside the suspect's car, raising concerns a firearm may have been discarded in or around school property. Officials did not say which school, but they did say that it was after school hours.

Out of an abundance of caution, the agency requested assistance from a specialized firearm detection K-9 unit and the Geraldine Police Department.

Together, both teams conducted a thorough search of school grounds and the surrounding area.

During that search, officials say they recovered a handgun near a school building.
