A Lawndale woman who was known as a pillar in the community, a councilmember and a dedicated volunteer with the Cleveland County Democratic Party was struck and killed Oct. 1 while crossing Marion Street to get to the Cleveland County Fairgrounds.

Sarah Hord Queen, 79, was on her way to volunteer at the Democratic Party booth when she was hit in the crosswalk at the main entrance to the fair , according to information from Cleveland County NC Democratic Party. She was taken to Atrium Health - Cleveland where she died from her injuries.

Arthur Joseph Durazzi, 82, of Lancaster, South Carolina, has been identified as the driver but has not been charged, according to Shelby Police. He was going approximately 45 miles per hour at the time of the incident, police say.
