TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) - The Amphitheater School District is considering closing several schools due to a significant decline in enrollment. The district is currently reviewing data to determine which schools will be affected.
Matthew Kopec, an Amphitheater Public Schools board member, highlighted the financial challenges the district faces. "What we’re having to do is face the financial reality we’re in. We’re not the federal government, we can't spend more than we take in," Kopec said.
Enrollment numbers have dropped significantly over the past decade. "Around the turn of the century we had just under 19,000 students, today we have 11,000," Kopec said.
The district's superintendent on Thursday sent a letter to parents and students indicating the potential closure of four or five element
