MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - A man has been convicted of killing a gas station customer in a 2023 stabbing.
District Attorney Steve Mulroy says a jury found 64-year-old Joseph Smith guilty of second-degree murder after a five-day trial. The jury also convicted Smith of tampering with or fabricating evidence.
In 2023, Smith was working at the Exxon on North Danny Thomas Boulevard in Memphis.
Police say a male customer cut Smith with a knife, and at the time, Smith told police he stabbed the victim in self-defense.
According to arrest documents, security video showed Smith approach the victim and argue. They wrestled to the ground, then Smith stabbed him in the stomach.
According to police, the victim had no visible weapon.
Smith admitted that he had given his knife away before officers ar
