SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) -400 students at Springfield’s Fremont Elementary ended the week in stride.

Kiwanis Club and Souls for the Heart gave every student a new pair of tennis shoes.

It’s a long-standing tradition for the club, which started in the 1950s. They keep doing it because there are always kids who need new kicks.

“They are very excited. We’ve had a lot of kids say, Oh my gosh, I love this pair of shoes. Thank you so much. And that is so heartwarming and such a big impact on our community,“ said Dr. Janelle Ballard, Principal at Fremont Elementary School.

Kiwanis also operates a shoe bank with the SPS PTA Clothing Bank for any student who qualifies for free and reduced lunches.
