A final decision by an environmental regulator this week appears to affirm that Niagara County will not be getting a new hazardous waste landfill.

That’s according to a decision made by New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Region 6 Director Randall Young on Thursday.

Young rejected a proposal from CWM Chemical Services to build a 43.5-acre landfill to hold about 6 million tons of hazardous waste in the Town of Porter along rural Balmer Road.

His decision finalized a 20-year process and followed the DEC’s Hazardous Waste Siting Board’s conclusion on Monday to deny the facility a necessary certificate. The Siting Board said, among other things, that another hazardous waste landfill in New York was unnecessary and against public interest.
