Shubman Gill has been appointed as the new captain of India's One Day International (ODI) team, replacing Rohit Sharma. This decision was made by the All India Senior Men’s Selection Committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, during a meeting in Ahmedabad. Gill's first assignment as ODI captain will be the three-match series against Australia, starting on October 19 in Perth.
Rohit Sharma, who previously captained the team, will still be part of the squad along with former captain Virat Kohli. This series marks their return to international cricket after the 2025 Champions Trophy. Rohit has led India in 56 ODIs, achieving 42 victories and 12 losses since taking over the captaincy from Kohli in December 2021.
The decision to appoint Gill as captain is seen as a strategic move to prepare him for future leadership roles, including the 2027 World Cup. Gill has already been leading the Test team since earlier this year and has shown promise in his captaincy. Under his leadership, India managed a 2-2 draw in the recent Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
The ODI series will take place from October 19 to 25, followed by five T20 matches from October 29 to November 8. Meanwhile, wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant is expected to miss the tour due to a leg injury sustained during the England tour. An official announcement regarding the squad is anticipated soon, following India's recent victory over West Indies by an innings and 140 runs in a Test match.
