NEW YORK — The Red Sox took an important step forward this season, overcoming a litany of injuries to reach the postseason for the first time since 2021.
But as the New York Yankees made painfully clear this past week, the Red Sox still have a ways to go before they can be considered true championship contenders.
The offseason came abruptly for the Red Sox, who lost the final two games of the AL Wild Card series after initially taking Game 1. Defensive miscues, poor situational hitting and some bad breaks doomed the club, which must now re-tool over the winter to ensure next year’s team is better equipped to make a deep run.
