A Russian drone strike targeted a passenger train at a station in Ukraine's Sumy region, injuring dozens of people. The attack occurred on Saturday in Shostka, located northeast of Kyiv, according to regional governor Oleh Hryhorov and local officials. The train involved was reportedly traveling from the Ukrainian capital when it was struck.

While the exact number of casualties has not been disclosed, Hryhorov shared a photo of a burning passenger carriage and confirmed that emergency responders were on the scene. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack, describing it as a "brutal Russian drone strike" on Telegram. He posted a video showing the wreckage, including a burning carriage and shattered windows.

Zelenskyy noted that both passengers and Ukrainian rail workers were among the injured. Hryhorov stated that an "operational headquarters" was being set up at the site of the attack. Oksana Tarasiuk, head of the local district administration, reported that approximately 30 individuals sustained injuries, but no fatalities were confirmed immediately following the incident.

Zelenskyy emphasized the deliberate nature of the attack, asserting, "The Russians could not have been unaware that they were targeting civilians. This is terrorism, which the world has no right to ignore."

This drone strike is part of a broader escalation in Russia's air campaign against Ukraine's railway infrastructure, which has seen near-daily attacks over the past two months. The incident followed a significant assault on Ukraine's gas network, where Russia launched its largest attack since the invasion began, deploying 35 missiles and 60 drones targeting gas facilities in the Kharkiv and Poltava regions.

In recent weeks, Moscow's military has intensified its strikes on Ukraine's power grid, leading to widespread blackouts and disruptions in heating as winter temperatures drop. On Thursday, Zelenskyy accused Russia of increasing the risk of nuclear accidents by staging an attack that cut power to the decommissioned Chernobyl nuclear power station. He reported that over 20 Russian drones were used in an attack on Slavutych, which resulted in a three-hour power outage at the nearby Chernobyl facility. The Ukrainian energy ministry indicated that this outage affected a containment unit designed to prevent contamination from the catastrophic nuclear accident that occurred in 1986.
