Ifound it interesting that while Congress squabbles about the shutdown that causes people to lose their jobs and many to work without pay, members of Congress continue to receive their salaries. Yes, they will continue to receive a paycheck for the duration of the shutdown.

In the Constitution, Article 1, Section 6 states, “The Senators and Representatives shall receive a Compensation for their Services, to be ascertained by Law, and paid out of the Treasury of the United States.” This means that since 1983, “member salaries have been funded in a permanent appropriations account,” according to a recent Congressional Research Service report, meaning funding for their pay doesn’t need to be renewed annually, which means they get paid during a shutdown.
