CHAPEL HILL — Whatever small measure of enthusiasm and excitement that remained among North Carolina fans from the offseason rush of hiring Bill Belichick was extinguished Saturday afternoon.

Clemson scored on its first play from scrimmage, the first of five first-half touchdown passes, and sent the UNC crowd home early in a 38-10 shellacking in the first meeting between Belichick, a six-time Super Bowl champion as a head coach, and Clemson coach Dabo Swinney, a two-time national champion.

The UNC student section emptied out little by little after each Tiger score in the first half – and, after halftime, few decided it was the best place to spend a beautiful Saturday afternoon. Most of the other fans though
