LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - One of the biggest risks to homeowners is fire. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, there were more than 340,000 fires in residential buildings, resulting in nearly 3,000 deaths, over 10,000 injuries, and losses exceeding $11 million.

That’s why on Saturday in Lansing, the American Red Cross, partnered with University of Michigan Health-Sparrow for the ‘Sound The Alarm’ Initiative.

This program has volunteers go around to houses and install smoke detectors as well as help create fire escape plans, all free of charge.

Judi Harris, the Executive Director for the American Red Cross Mid-Michigan Chapter, says, “We can prevent fatalities when we put in smoke alarms and make sure they have a chance to get out when there is a fire.”
