ST. LOUIS — A woman's body was found Friday morning in a vacant lot near the north St. Louis riverfront, according to the St. Louis police department.

Police said a utility worker discovered the woman's body around 10 a.m. in the 7600 block of Hall Street, near the site of the city's former workhouse jail, police said. The workhouse closed in 2022 and was demolished in 2025.

Officers who arrived on the scene said the woman was not conscious or breathing. She was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

A cause of death has not been determined, according to police.

The St. Louis medical examiner's office said an autopsy will be conducted.

Police say they are still working to identify the woman. They have not released any information about her.

The investigation is ongoing.
