Shohei Ohtani managed to overcome early struggles on the mound in his postseason debut as a pitcher, helping the Los Angeles Dodgers through the first six innings in Game 1 of their National League Division Series against the Philadelphia Phillies.
The Dodgers take the 1-0 lead in the series after a 5-3 victory over the Phillies.
Ohtani gave up three earned runs to the Phillies in the second inning before settling in.
He struck out nine batters before having a conversation with manager Dave Roberts in the dugout and not returning to the mound for the seventh inning.
The Dodgers superstar was never able to settle in at the plate. He struck out four straight times, including three to Phillies pitcher Cristopher Sanchez.
Several other members of the Dodgers’ lineup managed to produce some run support for Ohtani in the later innings as Los Angeles took the 5-3 lead in the seventh inning.
It was his postseason debut as a pitcher on Saturday against a formidable Phillies lineup, giving fans their first glimpse of Shohei Ohtani as both postseason slugger and playoff starting pitcher.
