Carlyle Ramsey, a Southside education icon who left a lasting legacy at Danville Community College after leading it for more than two decades, died on Saturday.

He was 83.

Ramsey retired from the role of president at DCC in August 2013, but still stayed involved with the Southside institution for nearly a decade after he stepped away.

In 2022, he was the commencement speaker for the graduating class, resuming an in-person ceremony following the COVID-19 pandemic.

He started in 1992 as the fourth president at DCC. Before coming there, he was the assistant vice chancellor of the Virginia Community College System from 1989 to 1992. In addition, he also served as the dean of instruction and student development at DCC from 1987 to 1988.
