A federal judge in Oregon has temporarily stopped the Trump administration from sending the National Guard to Portland, following a legal challenge from state and city officials. US District Judge Karin Immergut issued the temporary order on Saturday, saying the deployment cannot move forward until the case is reviewed further.
The lawsuit, filed by the state of Oregon and the city of Portland, argued that the federal plan overstepped legal boundaries and risked heightening tensions in the city.
The Defence Department had earlier announced plans to place around 200 members of Oregon’s National Guard under federal control for a period of 60 days. Officials said the move was meant to protect federal property at locations where protests were either happening or likely to occur.
