Life is full of unexpected events. Once, while I was swimming in the river, just as the sun was setting, the water exploded with fish catching their evening meal. In elementary school, I won a longshot bike raffle; I rode it ‘till the wheels fell off, and then some.

Sometimes these moments are less pleasant. If you’ve ever caught your toe on a wall corner in the dark, you’ll know what I mean. Once, as a teenager, I was playing with some friends and accidentally filleted my index finger to the bone, an injury left that finger permanently disfigured.

It was a wonderful surprise my partner and I realized we were having a baby. It was gutting when we lost it. Life is sweet, but it’s also bitter. What’s a person to do? For me, I try to appreciate the good times and have grace in the bad times
