South Carolina State University has initiated a campus lockdown after reports of gunfire on campus Saturday night.

The university said in a campus alert that police believed shots were fired in the area of Hugine Suites and that they were investigating. The university message told Hugine Suites residents were were not in the complex to report to the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center and those who were at Hugine Suites to "stay put."

Students in other residence halls were told to return to their rooms and off-campus residents were asked to leave the campus.
