In a move to encourage digital transactions and curb cash payments at toll plazas, the government has announced new rules under which vehicles without a valid FASTag will be charged 1.25 times the regular toll if the payment is made through the Unified Payments Interface (UPI). However, those opting to pay in cash will continue to pay double the regular toll fee.

The National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) (Third Amendment) Rules, 2025, will come into effect from November 15, 2025, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) said in a notification on Saturday.
