WASHINGTON — The federal government was thrown into a shutdown Wednesday with no easy endgame in sight, as Democrats held firm to their demands to salvage health care subsidies that President Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress dismissed as something to possibly discuss later.

About 750,000 federal workers were expected to be furloughed, with Trump's administration threatening mass firings. Blame was cast on all sides. No new talks were scheduled after the president failed to secure a deal with congressional leaders.

Many offices will be shuttered, perhaps permanently, as Trump promised to target programs Democrats favor. The economic fallout could ripple across the U.S.
