A jackal was beaten to death by villagers in Tehdia village of Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich district on Saturday night after it attacked a man and his daughter, a forest official said.

For the past three weeks, residents of six villages of Bahraich district have been living in fear of wolves, which have so far killed six people and injured around 20 others in separate incidents. Forest officials said it was possible that the villagers mistook the jackal for a wolf and killed it.

The injured have been identified as Raj Kumar, 41, and his daughter Sushila, 21. Both were taken to a hospital for treatment. Bahraich Divisional Forest Officer Ram Singh Yadav said the jackal’s body was sent for a postmortem examination and that the report was awaited.
