PM Modi Expresses Condolences Over Nepal and Darjeeling Tragedies

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and destruction caused by heavy rains in Nepal and the Darjeeling region of West Bengal. In a post on X, he stated, "The loss of lives and damage caused by heavy rains in Nepal is distressing. We stand with the people and Government of Nepal in this difficult time. As a friendly neighbour and first responder, India remains committed to providing any assistance that may be required."

In Nepal, torrential rains have led to landslides and flash floods, resulting in at least 47 fatalities since Friday. Kalidas Dhauboji, a spokesperson for the Armed Police Force, reported that 35 of these deaths occurred in the Ilam district, which borders India. Additionally, nine individuals are missing, and three others have died due to lightning strikes. Rescue operations are ongoing, as stated by Shanti Mahat from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority.

The heavy rainfall has also impacted the eastern Indian hill region of Darjeeling, where at least 14 people have died due to landslides. PM Modi conveyed his condolences, saying, "Deeply pained by the loss of lives due to a bridge mishap in Darjeeling. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon."

Local authorities confirmed that seven bodies have been recovered, with efforts underway to find two more missing individuals. Abhishek Roy, a police official, noted that the situation is being closely monitored, and rescue operations are being hampered by the continuous downpour.

The rains have caused significant damage to infrastructure, blocking roads and washing away bridges. In Darjeeling, the main routes have been severely affected, isolating communities and disrupting daily life. The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall in sub-Himalayan West Bengal, warning of further landslides and road blockages.

Raju Bista, the BJP MP for Darjeeling, expressed his concern over the devastation, stating, "The devastating rain in the past few days has caused massive damages across our region." He has mobilized party workers to assist those affected by the disaster.

As the situation develops, authorities in both Nepal and India are taking precautions to ensure the safety of residents and are coordinating relief efforts to support those impacted by the severe weather conditions.

The monsoon season, which typically lasts from mid-June to mid-September, often brings heavy rains and landslides to the mountainous regions of Nepal and India, leading to loss of life and property each year. Weather officials predict that the rains will continue until Monday, urging residents to remain vigilant and safe during this challenging time.
