A man has fallen to his death off the side of a mountain while reportedly trying to take a picture of his fellow hikers with the surrounding snowy peaks.

Identified only as Mr Hong, the hiker was trekking Nama Peak in the Sichuan Province of China when he got too close to the edge of an established path through the dangerous terrain.

The 31-year-old had undone his safety rope in order to take pictures of his fellow hikers when he slipped and plunged down a steep snow covered mountainside as the rest of his group watched on in horror.

Witnesses said Mr Hong had not been using an ice axe and was unable to stop his fall, sliding down more than 200 metres of snow before vanishing from view, ultimately falling into rubble below, The Sun reported.
