Now is the time to travel the backroads and byways of Michigan, curating trips that take us to new places, even if they’re old. One such destination is Metamora, a village 49 miles north of Detroit, with a population of 594, according to the latest census.

That’s seriously small, but the downtown, with its restored 19th-century buildings in perfect condition, beckons with its centerpiece edifice, the White Horse Inn, a rambling wooden building painted white that takes up an entire city block.
