A rare October Harvest Moon will rise this weekend, doubling as a supermoon and kicking off a series of celestial shows.

The moon will reach its full phase at 11:48 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 6, but will appear full in the sky from Sunday through Tuesday.

Typically, the Harvest Moon occurs in September. The name is given to the full moon that rises closest to the autumn equinox. Since the equinox fell on Sept. 22, this year’s designation goes to the October full moon, according to Space.com.

An October Harvest Moon is an uncommon event . Space.com notes that between 1970 and 2050, the Harvest Moon occurs in October only 18 times. The last instance was in 2020, and the next will not be until 2028.
