There was a running joke among Broncos players during the week that Adam Reynolds might retire if he could help the club win the grand final.
That idea must have been tempting for Reynolds when he was being carried off the field by two Broncos trainers with a calf injury in the 50th minute last night.
The 35-year-old skipper chased through after his own kick when he stopped running and immediately signalled to the sideline for help. He hobbled over the eastern touchline before laying on his back, no doubt realising his night – and potential premiership dream – was over.
The initial fear was Reynolds had ruptured his hamstring again, which he did the last time he played against Melbourne in round 23.
