Two people were killed and another dozen were wounded late Saturday in Montgomery, Alabama , where gunmen opened fire on each other on a crowded street.

Gunfire began shortly after 11:30 p.m. local time in the state capital. Police described the incident as a mass shooting.

“This was two parties involved that were basically shooting at each other in the middle of a crowd,” Montgomery Police Chief James Graboys told reporters on Sunday. The shooters, he said, “did not care about the people around them when they did it.”
