SPRINGFIELD – For Tanner Coll, Saturday night was about more than just football.

Springfield’s senior co-captain and his teammates found themselves in a slugfest with Haverford. The Fords were chasing Cougars in the Central League standings. The Cougars carried memories of last year’s loss to the Fords, a defeat that cost them sole possession of the league title. This season, Springfield controlled its destiny, entering Week 7 unbeaten.

But the game was about more than revenge or standings.

The Cougars were playing for Jodi Herzig.

Herzig, the mother of senior co-captain Evan, has been battling cancer. Evan has been sidelined in recent weeks with an injury, but his teammates have carried him with them. Before kickoff, Mrs. Herzig walked to midfield as an honorary captain.
